Die Zeit: Do you concern yourself with new media and technology?

Jean-Luc Godard: I try to keep up. But people make films on the Internet to show that they exist, not in order to look at things.

In addition to formulating a 14 week response to the above quip, this class will attempt to push more on the art side of the art/technology divide – with a strong emphasis on making things. Quick things. Light things. That said, there will be weekly assignments that will build as the semester goes on. And the completion of each is important to shape of the semester.

Midterms will be collaborative, built in a round robin fashion, and will be a two week assignment.

Finals are more of an open proposal, and will be pitched to the class in week 10.

This syllabus will remain fairly fluid and will shift and evolve as the semester goes on.

Required reading:
Lev Manovich “The Language of New Media”
Robert Bresson “Notes on the Cinematographer”

And there will be required weekly readings, mostly available online.

Suggested reading:
William Gibson “Pattern Recognition” [if you're at ITP you've read this already, right?]

Grades:
Attendance/In-class participation 25%
Assignments 25%
