geospatial revolution project

http://geospatialrevolution.psu.edu/

“Penn State Public Broadcasting is developing the Geospatial Revolution Project, an integrated public media and outreach initiative about the world of digital mapping and how it is changing the way we think, behave, and interact.

The project will feature a web-based serial release of video episodes—each telling an intriguing geospatial story. Overarching themes woven throughout the episodes will tie them together, and the episodes will culminate in a 60-minute documentary. Release of the first episode is planned for mid-September 2010.”

Great Advert

A great advert which highlights the importance of a soundtrack – and that simple imagery can work to achieve a point. I think it uses the idea of “new media” to highlight brand DNA in its purest form.

HBO Cube

HBO Cube

As interactive storytelling is something that I am particularly interested in, I figured I would share one of the more recent, more successful examples. The project was launched by HBO at the beginning of the school year. You can check it out online at HBO Imagine.

Thru You – Remixing Youtube

This has to be one of my favorite things I’ve come across on the internet. Kutiman, the person behind this project, spent two months searching for and collecting videos, then using them as content to compose new videos/songs with. There are seven different videos, all different styles. As this is something that has only been possible with the rise of user generated content, there are many different discussions this project brings up. One of the more applicable ones to this course, are the narrative elements that are introduced. They play just as big of a part as the music does in creating interest in the project. You watch them all on his site, but here is one to get started:

The Third & The Seventh (all CG)

Just because I had mentioned this in last class. This is the video that is all CG with a few minor exceptions. It’s amazing how real it all looks and even more so that it was primarily done by one person. I’m especially fascinated by the use of focus pulls throughout the video. It’s twelve and a half minutes long, but worth the watch if you’re interested (go full screen if you do).
